!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! just reminded me that I wanted to post this for a few weeks now: Would it not make much more sense to revitalize the Alpine brand for the new Twingo, instead of calling it just RS? Alpine is known for its RR layout cars.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Just imagine the Twingo in Alpine blue.
(I'd probably want a new car in 2016, and with seeing what will probably be on the market then I'm thinking this or whatever the Nissan IDx will become)

I suppose they could, but I honestly think the RenaultSport name probably carries more weight with modern performance car buyers, and particularly the sort of people who drool over fast Renault hatchbacks. I mean, they were making pretty much the best the segment had to offer for most of the 2000s. The 172/182 RenaultSport Clios are legendary.
...
Perhaps a Twingo Williams... Oh, oh God, I'm thinking about gold wheels again.

Why not just make a new Alpine based on the twingo platform?

Also an option, but I don't think Renault is willing to do the investment on things like extending the length of the platform. And if they can then still use the same production line as for the Smart
To be honest I have no idea how car production works, I just assume that you can use the same production line for multiple models, like the Aygo and 108/C1.

Would that now not be a Twingo Williams with Martini livery? That would be pretty sweet as well :-D.

It would!
It'd be like owning a Delta Integrale... 'Cept almost completely different...

Caterham can build them, they own 50% of Alpine.

Most likely? They will make both, it's only that they can make more money by naming the "standard" one RenaultSport and make a slightly more expensive RS Alpine special edition later on.
In fact, if it sells well enough, expect a vast array of versions (RenaultSport Twingo Alpine, RS Twingo Gordini , or whatever other historically significant name they can come across/have already trademarked)
Keeping in mind that this is an A segment car, for which they use to offer lots of slightly retrimmed special editions, and not even only on the dawn of the models' product cycle, but right from the launch.
